SOCIAL SCIENCES BUILDING
A Consolidated Home for the Social Sciences Division Offices and Classrooms at UC San Diego
SCOPE
75,000 sf
LOCATION
UCSD, San Diego, CA
ARCHITECT
Gwathmey Siegel & Associates with BGRP Architects
This headquarters building for the Social Sciences Division provided faculty and staff office space for its dozen departments, as well as meeting rooms, computer technology laboratory spaces, and special laboratories. The building sits on a ridge along a walkway running the north-south length of the campus. Views were preserved to the Pacific Ocean to the west and the San Gabriel Mountains to the east. Because of the area’s year-round moderate climate, none of the spaces were air conditioned and the corridors all open to the exterior. A carefully designed window system for each office allowed for views while mitigating the heat load of intense sunlight.
