SEVEN GABLES ON THE COAST OF MAINE
A Down East cabin grows to house an extended family
SCOPE
Extensive expansion of an old cabin
LOCATION
Friendship, ME
This old cabin on Maine’s rocky coast had been a family retreat for many years, but as the children grew and started their own families there was a pressing need to house multiple generations at once. The project included extensive expansions on the main and second levels to add multiple bedrooms, a new kitchen, bathrooms, and a wrap-around deck and skylit screened porch. Loose piles of rocks that had supported the old house corners were replaced with more reliable concrete piers. The multi-gabled roof line, brick-red painted siding with white trim, and a hand built fieldstone fireplace all reflected the classic elements of New England’s architectural heritage.
