The one-story concrete block box house, a response to the 1940’s housing demand for returning GIs, had seen this family through decades of change. Now that the children were grown and raising their own families elsewhere, the recently widowed client decided to finally make the house into the big open loft she had always dreamed of. All the interior walls and ceiling were removed. A single wall was added near one end of the space, with a kitchen on the living side and a bedroom on the back. The bathroom was moved to a new wing that helped enclose the back patio. A series of north facing skylights were added to provide diffuse, cooler light to balance the warm sun rays coming in through the south facing doors and windows.
