CAPE COD FUTURES

A family decides to invest the annual vacation house rent to build a home of their own

SCOPE
New house

LOCATION
Orleans, MA

GENERAL CONTRACTOR
Miller Starbuck Construction

After years of renting a vacation home on the Cape every summer, this family decided to buy a lot and build a house to fit their changing needs. The plan resembles a traditional cross shaped church, with the double height living/dining room in the nave, the kitchen at the center crossing, and a screened porch and bedrooms in the side transepts and apse. Skylights and clerestory windows provide abundant natural light and allow cooling breezes through the house on languid summer days. Exterior materials, colors, and details were all chosen to comply with comprehensive historic district design guidelines.
