WHATCOM ART MUSEUM | BELLINGHAM, WA
The team of Donnally Architects and Cambridge Seven Associates in Massachusetts were selected for a limited competition to design a new museum in Bellingham, Washington. The new building would join two others already in the museum's complex, providing 30,000 sf for both new art galleries and the new home for their children's museum.
The solution we developed located the lively children's museum functions on the lot corner and placed the more introspective adult galleries along the mid-block side. Working on the principal that one + one = three, a prominent central courtyard was used to bind the two main functions into a cohesive single design.
